Munich – city of royal residence

During this walk you will explore the history of the residence city of Munich with an official city of Munich tour guide.

In 1180 the Wittelsbach dynasty came to power, and in 1255 they founded a ducal residence in Munich, ruling for more than seven centuries.

In 1328 Duke Ludwig IV was Roman-German emperor and his residence in Munich was considerably expanded.

After Munich had experienced a new cultural heyday during the late Gothic period, the town became the capital of all of Bavaria in 1506 and a center of Renaissance.

Under the rule of Duke Maximilian I, Munich became an electoral residence in 1623. Although Munich had become an imperial residence as early as 1328, its rise to a metropolis began only 450 years later.

Toward the end of the 18th century Munich grew considerably, a development which was even accelerated when it became capital of the Kingdom of Bavaria. Munich experienced a tremendous economic, scientific and culture boom.
