As the so-called ‘capital of the movement’, Munich was a central location for the emergence, spread and implementation of National Socialist ideology. In our group tours, we examine the historical events between 1923 and 1945, shed light on the structures of the regime on site and discuss how the city deals with this past today.
This tour follows the traces of the rise of National Socialism in Munich. Starting at the Feldherrnhalle - a symbolic site of the failed Hitler putsch of 1923 - the route leads along Brienner Straße through the former party quarter to Königsplatz, a place of National Socialist demonstrations of power. Along the way, central buildings such as the former Gestapo headquarters and the so-called Führerbau are viewed from the outside. The tour provides insights into the ideological centre of the movement, its organisation and propaganda as well as the transformation of these places in today's cityscape.
This tour is dedicated to the reactions within the population during the National Socialist era. It begins at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität - the place where the ‘White Rose’ resistance group was active - and leads to other places that document both consent and resistance. Topics include the synchronisation of education and culture, the role of church institutions and personalities who opposed the regime. The tour ends in the Hofgarten with a view of the Haus der Kunst and provides an insight into Nazi cultural policy and today's culture of remembrance in Munich.
Also interesting: the Dachau memorial is only about 30 minutes from Munich and can also be visited on a guided tour.
