Located around 20 kilometres south-west of Munich, Starnberg not only has a high concentration of millionaires and celebrities, it is also a scenic gem. A stroll along the lake promenade with views stretching far across Lake Starnberg to the Alps marks the start of the approximately two-hour tour.
The meeting point for the guided tour is the historic Starnberg railway station. The building was constructed in 1855 according to plans by architect Friedrich von Bürklein, who was responsible for railway station buildings throughout Bavaria in the mid-19th century. It takes little imagination to picture the arrival of the numerous summer visitors who discovered Starnberg as a destination for excursions and holidays at that time.
With our certified tour guides at your side, you will learn many things about the lives of Munich's industrialists, artists and aristocrats who turned the lake into a glamorous destination during the summer season. Numerous luxury villas still bear witness to this today. If you arrive in your own bus, your guide can join you in Munich and introduce you to the special features of Starnberg and the area around the lake during the journey.
The tour continues along the lake promenade to the boat shed, where the famous Bucentaur – the magnificent Venetian ceremonial ship of the Wittelsbach electors – once lay. As early as the 17th century, the noble family organised spectacular festive trips on Lake Starnberg, which at that time was still called Lake Würm. King Ludwig II's special connection to the lake is also a topic of the excursion to Starnberg.
If desired, you can then continue by bus or on foot to Starnberg Castle Gardens, a park on the outskirts of the town with wonderful views of the lake and mountains. In the immediate vicinity, you can also visit the enchanting Rococo church of St. Joseph, an art-historical gem with magnificent stucco decoration.
If you have more time, you can book additional highlights: the guided tour of Starnberg can be combined with a visit to the Lake Starnberg Museum for an extra charge. Numerous exhibits there tell the story of the town and shipping on Lake Starnberg. Or you can board a Bavarian Lake Shipping boat yourself and relax on a round trip on Lake Starnberg.
The duration and fee for the guide will increase accordingly.
