Discover the city’s oldest Christmas market with our official guides. And the best thing: You can try some selected specialities right away! The tour is also offered to individuals on Saturdays.

No Christmas markets in 2020

Unfortunately the Munich Christkindlmarkt and all other Christmas markets in Munich cannot take place this year. All important information about the coronavirus and your stay in Munich can be found here.

Just like every year, the countless lights on the 30-metre Christmas tree are sparkling in front of the Neues Rathaus (town hall). The seductive smell of mulled wine and roasted almonds fills the air. Advent has arrived on Marienplatz (square) in Munich, and there’s a really nice time to be had in the pedestrian zone. This wonderful atmosphere is all you need to get in the mood for Christmas.

Your guide will tell you lots of interesting facts about the past and present of the Christkindlmarkt. You’ll also get to visit the stalls where classic Christkindlmarkt specialities and delicacies are sold. You’ll be able to tuck right into some delicious treats like roasted nuts and almonds, Stollenbrot (fruit loaf), Rahmschmankerl (creamy flatbreads) and mulled wine. And if there’s not much going on, the stall holders will always be up for a little chat and will tell you lots of interesting things about their products.

The Christkindlmarkt in Munich is the best place to put you in a festive mood, as it’s the “original” of the many Christmas markets in the city. It’s thought to date back to the Nikolausmarkt (St. Nicholas Market) of the 14th century. The traditional Nikolaidult fair was even officially recorded as taking place on Kaufingerstrasse in 1642. From the year 1806, the Nikolaimarkt became known as the “Christmarkt” as part of the Enlightenment. The “Münchner Christkindlmarkt” has had a permanent spot at the heart of the old town since 1972.

If you’d like to find out more about Munich at Christmas, you should stay at the Christkindlmarkt. You can enjoy special offers like the “Himmelswerkstatt” Christmas workshop in the New Town Hall, the Christkindl Post Office and lots more.

Every Saturday, we offer: Guided tours for individuals
