The Bavarian State Theatre, featuring the Residenztheater on Max-Joseph-Platz in the heart of the city, stands as one of the largest spoken theatres in the German-speaking region. In addition to the Residenztheater, affectionately called “Resi“ by Munich locals, the theatre is also home to the Cuvilliés-Theater and the Marstall. The Residenztheater produces performances in German only – however, some of these are shown with English surtitles.
Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera), by Bertolt Brecht (libretto) and Kurt Weill (music), with the collaboration of Elisabeth Hauptmann. Philipp Stölzl’s new production of Brecht and Weill’s classic, with sharp wit, unforgettable songs and social explosiveness, depicts a world in which everything has its price.

King Lear, by William Shakespeare. The Residenztheater is staging one of the most significant classics of theatrical literature. Directed by Elsa-Sophie Jach, the title role is played by audience favourite Manfred Zapatka, whose portrayal of an ageing monarch is one of the most eagerly awaited premieres of the season.

Faust I, a tragedy by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Director Ulrich Rasche condenses Goethe’s masterpiece into a powerful intimate drama exploring the inner conflict of modern man, torn between self-realisation, seduction and self-destruction.

My Queen, by Caren Jeß. This commissioned work is having its world premiere at the Marstall of the Residenztheater. Directed by Claudia Bossard, the play explores memory, identity and the stories people invent about themselves and others – navigating the realms of alienation, imagination and empathy.

The Münchner Kammerspiele on Maximilianstrasse is a municipal theatre, which itself can be described as a unique work of spatial art in the Art Nouveau style. Over the years, the theatre ensemble has included famous names like Therese Giehse and Heinz Rühmann. Berthold Brecht once directed here, and August Everding, Dieter Dorn, and Matthias Lilienthal have served as artistic directors. Barbara Mundel has been in charge of the Kammerspiele since the 2020/21 season. The Münchner Kammerspiele produce performances in German with English surtitles.

The truest True Crime, a story of survival by Anne Jelena Schulte. With black humour and a critical eye, the play explores the investigation of a crime. It centres on truth and the boundaries between reality, performance and media narratives.

In autumn 2021, the Volkstheater relocated to its new home in Munich's Schlachthofviertel (district): a modern brick building with arches and undulating curves. The theatre is run by Christian Stückl, a sculptor from Oberammergau, who is also the director of the Oberammergau Passion Play. Together with young actors and directors, he fosters an experimental environment in the theatre. The Volkstheater produces performances in German only.

The Nationaltheater, a classical building, is the venue of the Bayerische Staatsoper (opera), the Bavarian State Ballet and the Bavarian State Orchestra. A highlight of the season is the opera festival, which always takes place in June/July. The stage is one of the largest in the world and has premièred works by Richard Wagner. The Bayerische Staatsoper produces performances in the original language of the operas with German and English surtitles.

Since its beginnings, the Gärtnerplatztheater, as it is colloquially known in Munich, has presented operettas and musical comedies in the spirit of popular musical theatre. To this day, the theatre is one of the most important venues for opera, operetta, musicals and dance in Munich. Some of the productions have English and German subtitles.
