At Schliersee (lake), tranquil shores meet majestic mountains. Perfect for a short break in Upper Bavaria with stunning views.

Schliersee (lake): Our tips for a relaxing day out by the water

You don't need a detailed itinerary for a trip to Schliersee for it to be a success. That's precisely what makes the place so appealing: arrive at a leisurely pace in the morning, take a stroll along the shore, stop for a break now and then, gaze out over the water and enjoy the view of the mountain landscape.

The best way to enjoy Schliersee is with a walk right along the water's edge. The official lakeside trail, which includes a tree discovery trail, is easy to walk, around 7.3 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours. Along the way, you'll pass many little spots where you can stop for a break, so if you're not looking for a strenuous hike but rather a leisurely stroll with plenty of views, this is the perfect place for you.

You can sit on the shore, go for a swim in summer, or visit the wellness centre and enjoy pure relaxation. Right by the lake is also the Parkstrandbad, featuring the following attractions: a non-swimmer's area with lifeguards, a restaurant, a water park, a 3-metre diving platform, beach volleyball, table tennis, a playground, a lakeside lounge, a sun terrace and a shaded beer garden.

Ships, boats and a summer atmosphere

Those who prefer to experience the lake from the water have several options at Schliersee. From May to September, the motorboat Schliersee III operates across the lake between 11 am and 5 pm. The round trip takes around 45 minutes and departs from the Vitalwelt. There are also several boat hire outlets around the lake offering electric boats, pedalos, rowing boats and, in some cases, SUP boards.

High up: Schliersbergalm with panoramic views and a summer toboggan run

A real highlight lies above the village: the Schliersbergalm at 1,061 metres. It can be reached by cable car, which runs from 8.30 am to 10 pm in summer, or on foot via a well-maintained path, which takes about an hour. At the top, you'll find not only sweeping views of the lake and mountains, but also a summer toboggan run that winds its way down into the valley for over 950 metres.

A tip for getting even more out of your visit

Schliersee is also an ideal starting point for a short side trip. The Josefsthaler Waterfalls on the southern shore of the lake, in the district of Neuhaus, are particularly beautiful. The walk is rated as moderately difficult, is about 2.8 kilometres long and takes around 1.5 hours. This makes it an excellent option for anyone wishing to enhance their day by the lake with a nature experience featuring woods and waterfalls.

Schliersee: Getting there from Munich

Train from Munich: approx. 1 hour on the Bayerische Regiobahn to Schliersee (trains run hourly, and more frequently at peak times).

By car: 55 minutes via the A8 towards Salzburg
