Eibsee

Bavaria's most beautiful turquoise

Emerald-green water at the foot of the mighty Zugspitze – a trip to Eibsee (lake) is a unique experience of nature.

Eibsee: Our tips for a wonderful day out

The Eibsee is one of those places in the Munich area where, after just five minutes, you find yourself thinking: “Right, this is exactly why I love Bavaria.” Turquoise water, little islets, the mountains behind them and the Zugspitze (Germany's highest mountain) towering above. Lake Eibsee was formed around 3,600 years ago by a massive rockslide in which large sections of the Zugspitze broke away. These masses of debris filled an area covered by permafrost, forming the lake basin we see today, complete with its islands.

The best way to start is simply to set off from the shore. The entire circular route (7.7 kilometres) takes around 2.5 hours. It takes you right up to the water's edge, then through a wooded area, and repeatedly to spots where you can pause for a moment and snap a few photos. On warm days, a swim is of course a must, as the water is clear and often pleasantly cool. The view from the lake towards the Zugspitze is truly unforgettable!

Boating, SUP & swimming breaks

A perfect day at Eibsee is all about slowing down and relaxing. Here, you can take a break, enjoy a snack on the shore and dip your feet in the water from time to time. The lake looks particularly peaceful from the water: whether you bring your own SUP or hire a boat on site, you'll discover whole new perspectives on the small islands, the bays and the impressive mountain panorama.

Zugspitze: Take the cable car right to the top

Eibsee is also an ideal starting point for a trip to the Zugspitze. The cable car is located right by the lake, making it very easy to combine the two activities. First, enjoy the lake air and the natural surroundings on the shore, followed by a summit experience with fabulous panoramic views – provided, of course, that the weather cooperates.
