Salzburg

In the footsteps of Mozart

Situated around 140 kilometres away from Munich, embedded against a magnificent backdrop of surrounding mountains, you will find the city of Salzburg, famed for its Baroque style.

The city on the banks of the Salzach is famous around the world for being the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, the home of the Salzburg Festival, and the setting for the Hollywood classic "The Sound of Music". Its most famous landmark is the Festung Hohensalzburg (Hohensalzburg Castle), which sits majestically atop the Festungsberg mountain.

If you look a little closer on your stroll through the old town, you will discover the magical charm of its romantic alleyways and expansive squares. This unique charm led to UNESCO naming Salzburg old town as a World Heritage Site in 1996.

Salzburg is particularly atmospheric in the run-up to Christmas: Countless Christmas markets – the historic Christkindl market on the Dom- und Residenzplatz square in particular – attract crowds with their delicious culinary treats and traditional crafts.

Visit Salzburg from Munich easily on a guided tour, by car via the A8 or by train using the inexpensive Bayern-ticket.
