Video: Local Love Munich
A city is shaped by the people who live in it – and among them, there are some truly exceptional individuals. We have won over a few of these outstanding talents as ambassadors for Munich. In this questionnaire, we introduce them to you. This time: professional trail runner Kimi Schreiber.
Were you born in Munich or did you move here?
I moved here. I was born in Starnberg.
This is what Munich tastes like:
Pretzel and coffee.
This is what Munich sounds like:
I hear the rushing of the Isar and brass band music.
This is what Munich smells like:
Depending on the season, summer rain, stale beer, cherry blossom in the Olympiapark, or colourful autumn leaves on the Isar trails.
Munich is the only city where you can …
… encounter both Bavarian tradition and a sense of new beginnings.
Favourite Bavarian word:
“Narrisch” (meaning daft or mad).
The most beautiful building in the city:
The Nationaltheater.
This Munich cliché I'd like to dispel as an ambassador:
That you can't go trail running in Munich because a big city and nature don't mix.
The most catchy Munich song:
“Ein Prosit der Gemütlichkeit”
Isar or Eisbach?
Isar. That's where I run and train every day.
Beer garden or bar?
As a professional athlete, neither is somewhere you'd often find me. But if I had to choose, definitely a relaxed afternoon in a beer garden in summer.
Philharmonic or brass music?
Brass music – that's where the atmosphere really comes alive.
Lederhosen/Dirndl: yes or no?
I own neither. I do at least have a Janker. Though truth be told, I think Bavarian traditional dress is actually rather smart.
Mountains or lakes at the weekend?
The mountains – to disappear for hours on end.
When I'm away, I often boast about this Munich fact:
Always and everywhere: the Isar trails. My running mecca right on the doorstep.
The best place in Munich to impress visitors?
I think the Viktualienmarkt would go down very well. Everything that makes Munich what it is comes together there beautifully.
The best spot for a sundowner?
Hackerbrücke, Olympiaberg, the banks of the Isar.
The best place for a romantic date?
A stroll along the Isar followed by an alcohol-free beer to go from the Reichenbachkiosk. Or the summer Tollwood festival.
The most beautiful walk?
Oh, they've all got something to offer. I enjoy walking through Haidhausen, through the university quarter, through the Englischer Garten, through Nymphenburger Schlosspark, along the Isar, through Westpark, and even through the city centre every now and then – as long as it's not a Saturday …
When I want some peace and quiet, I go …
… running. Long and far and alone.
