Entrepreneur Annette Roeckl in Munich.

Questionnaire: Annette Roeckl

The most attractive building in the city, Mrs. Roeckl?

Munich is shaped by extraordinary women. In our questionnaire we would like to introduce a few of them. This time: the glove-maker Annette Roeckl. She loves the area around the Roecklplatz, which was named after her family.

Were you born in Munich or did you move here?
I was born in Munich, and remain a passionate resident of Munich.

In which district are you at home?
In Isarvorstadt, where the Roecklplatz is. I like the atmosphere, the people, the residents who've been there for years and the bars and restaurants that bring the whole area to life. The Isar is close by, it's green, and you can still get into the city in no time.

What does Munich taste like?
Like snacks in a beer garden and Weisswurst (white sausage) with sweet mustard.

What does Munich sound like?
The rush of the Isar.

What does Munich smell like?
Fresh! The air is good in Munich, and depending on the time of year, it smells of acacias, lime blossom or lilac because our air is so good.

Munich is the only city where ...
… you can get around really freely and very safely. The water and air quality are exceptional. It's not all paved over.

The most attractive building in the city?
The Lenbachhaus. I like the garden, the interior and the façade.

The catchiest Munich song?
"Skandal im Sperrbezirk" by the Spider Murphy Gang. The song came out in 1981 and is one of the band's biggest hits.

Isar or Eisbach?
There's more water, more free space, a greater expanse.

Beer garden or bar?
I love the beer garden system: the fact that you can bring your own food is insanely generous of the owners. You see all layers of society and every age group there, and the atmosphere is wonderful. And you can sit in a beer garden for hours. I think it's a great offering.

Philharmonic orchestra or brass band music?
Philharmonic. I like going to wonderful concerts.

A weekend in the mountains or by the lake?
In the summer, I prefer the lakes for swimming. In spring and autumn I like hiking in the mountains, and skiing in the winter.

The best place in Munich to impress visitors?
The Roeckl-Platz. Not just because it's our own square, but because it's insanely beautiful. But I also enjoy showing visitors the inner city – especially the Viktualienmarkt (food market).

What is the best place in Munich for an after-work beer?
Anywhere between the Roeckl-Platz and the Viktualienmarkt. There's lots of little streets around that area, and some unconventional bars and restaurants.

The best place in Munich for a romantic date?
The Rosengarten (Rose Garden)! You can walk through a romantic sea of roses there.

The best place in Munich to think?
The Isar wetlands heading south out of the city. There are not so many people, but you have the expanse and the river so you can really relax.

The best place in Munich to experience art?
The opera because it offers art at a very high level. But also the wonderful collections at the Lenbachhaus and the Pinakothek museums.

The best place in Munich if you are longing for Italy?
A good ice-cream parlour, for example the "Roma" on the Roecklplatz.
