Tucked away in a secluded corner of the Ammergau Alps lies Schloss Linderhof (Palace), the favourite residence of the ‘Fairy-Tale King’ Ludwig II, where he sought solitude. He could never have imagined that it would one day be designated an official UNESCO World Heritage Site. How fortunate that the palace and its enchanting grounds are now open to all visitors.
Start your day trip to Linderhof in Munich, where our guide will welcome you on the coach. During the journey, he will give you an introduction to the country and its people, with a particular focus on King Ludwig II and his castles.
You will learn how the monarch incorporated his love of Richard Wagner’s operas, the Baroque palaces of the French Sun King Louis XIV, medieval chivalric romance and German legends into the design of the palace and its grounds.
For all its fairy-tale charm, the interior design at Linderhof in particular displays a surprisingly high level of technical sophistication for the late 19th century.
Upon arrival at Linderhof, our guide accompanies the group to the palace. Here, a local guide from the Bavarian Palaces and Lakes Administration takes over for a guided tour lasting around half an hour through this Rococo gem, featuring the Hall of Mirrors, the Tapestry Room and the dining room with its famous ‘Tischlein-deck-dich’ table.
This retractable dining table in the dining room allowed the king to dine without servants.
Another technical ‘marvel’ is the park’s water feature, which includes a fountain in front of the palace that shoots an impressive 22 metres into the air every half hour, powered by natural pressure.
The recently renovated Venus Grotto, an artificial stalactite cave and the highlight of the park, is even regarded as a technical wonder of the world. It is also included in the guided tour.
The décor is inspired by a stage set from Wagner’s opera ‘Tannhäuser’ and was already electrically lit in Ludwig’s day. It glows red in homage to the Venusberg scene from the opera, whilst blue light creates an illusion of the Blue Grotto of Capri.
Also on display is the world’s first permanently installed power station, which in 1878 powered carbon arc lamps and a machine that created waves on the heated lake inside the grotto.
A gilded barge bobs on the lake, surrounded by 30,000 stalactites and a waterfall. Further highlights of the park are the two exotic structures: the Moorish Kiosk with its golden peacock throne and the Moroccan House.
This day trip offers the chance to stop off at Ettal Abbey. Highlights of the Benedictine abbey include the imposing dome and the magnificent altar.
The abbey is regarded as one of the most significant monuments of the Bavarian Baroque period. In the abbey shop and the abbey’s own distillery, you can sample and purchase the famous Ettal Abbey liqueur. It is still made today, just as it was in the past, using old recipes based on herbs from the region.
Another option is a detour to Oberammergau to see the Passion Play, in which, according to a religious vow, the story of Christ’s suffering is performed every ten years by the citizens of Oberammergau. The guild of the so-called ‘Herrgottsschnitzer’ (carvers of the Holy Father) has also been based in Oberammergau since the Middle Ages.
In the Living Workshop, visitors have the opportunity to watch woodcarvers and other craftspeople at work.
Also particularly worth seeing are the Lüftlmalereien (facade paintings) featuring Christian motifs, everyday scenes and motifs from fairy tales, which can be found on the facades of many of the village’s houses.
