Many colourful houses on two pavements with a few people in Rothenburg ob der Tauber.

Day trip for groups: Rothenburg ob der Tauber

The medieval gem of Rothenburg ob der Tauber

According to travellers from all over the world, Rothenburg is a must-see – otherwise you haven’t really experienced Germany. No other small town in the country is as highly regarded for its well-preserved medieval townscape. Come and see for yourself the charm of this medieval gem on a day trip.

There is little tarmac in Rothenburg and no straight lines, but plenty of romance: the cobblestones of the narrow lanes that wind through the winding old town, with its turrets and pretty half-timbered houses, are uneven.

The journey takes place in a comfortable coach, accompanied by one of our certified guides, along the Romantic Road, one of the oldest, best-known and most popular holiday routes in Germany. It passes through several historic towns, so there is plenty to talk about: for example, Augsburg and its Roman roots, known above all for the Fugger merchant dynasty. About medieval towns such as Nördlingen and Dinkelsbühl, the scenes of costly battles during the Thirty Years’ War, and, last but not least, about Rothenburg’s unique history.

If you’re planning a stopover, Harburg is a good choice. Depending on your schedule, you can use the stop for a coffee break or a brief tour of the castle. Its history dates back to the year 1150. However, the little town has more to offer than just the castle complex: among other things, its location in the Nördlinger Ries, which was formed by a meteorite impact 14.6 million years ago.

Upon arrival in Rothenburg, our guide will accompany the group into the town centre. If you would like a guided tour, this must be booked in advance with Tourismus ob der Tauber. Alternatively, the town is easy to explore on your own.

One should certainly not miss the historic market square with the town hall and the carillon at the Ratstrinkstube. Every day between 10 am and 10 pm, two windows in the gable open on the hour to re-enact the ‘Meistertrunk’ legend of 1631. According to this legend, the mayor at the time saved the town from destruction at the hands of General Tilly during the Thirty Years’ War by striking a deal. The only condition: the mayor had to drink a huge jug of wine in one go in front of the general. The Museum of City History offers an interactive presentation of ‘Der Meistertrunk’.

We also recommend a walk around the city walls and a visit to the Käthe Wohlfahrt Christmas Village, which is open all year round.

Depending on their arrival time and the available time slots, participants may also join individual guided tours.
