Viktualienmarkt typology

Who do you meet at the Viktualienmarkt?

The Viktualienmarkt in Munich is a centre, sight and status symbol. This is where locals shop and where tourists come to sample the flavours. We have identified eight types of people you are guaranteed to meet at the city's most famous market.

The conscious one

How to recognise her: airy trousers made of organic linen, fair trade slippers, embroidered jacket from India, but of course bought locally

You can to meet her here: In the queue at the juice stand Trübenecker, at First8 Kombucha and then in front of the shelf with fermented products at Kraut & Müller

What she has with her: a well-read book entitled The Nutritional Compass

What she orders: an organic juice ‘The green’ with apple, spinach, lemon, turmeric and ginger

She talks about: ‘Well, I've been fermenting my vegetables for a while now!’

And on the way home, she picks up... fermented radishes and seedlings from Samen-Schmitz.

The original Münchner

How to recognise him: Well worn traditional jacket, corduroy trousers, shopping bag from Tengelmann (former german supermarket)

You can meet him here: at Karnoll's baking and coffee stand, in the Metzger-Zeile  (street with several butchers) or at Pferdemetzgerei Wörle (horse butchery)

What he has with him: the Abendzeitung (Munich newspaper) from yesterday

What he orders: a cup of coffee and a Leberkäss roll - or first the Leberkäse and then the coffee

He talks about: „Mei, weißt wen i letztens droffa hob?“ (‘Do you know who I met recently?’ - with a Bavarian accent)

And on the way home he takes... Pretzels and wieners for dinner!

The hipster

How to recognise him: beanie or cap, racing bike or gravel bike, Salomons or Asics

You can meet him here: at the market patisserie Lea Zapf, the Hungarian food stand Szia Szia and at the vegetarian Gürmet Wein & Meze

What he has with him: a shopping bag from Optimal Records with a few new records inside

What he orders: a lángos with trout, miso yoghurt, quail egg and mustard caviar or a grilled kimchi brioche, accompanied by a glass of natural wine

He talks about: ‘Let's meet later for a flat white at sweet spot?‘

And on the way home, he picks up... a Hungarian organic wine with an exciting design-label.

The in-crowd (Munich Schickeria’)

How to recognise them: colourful cashmere jumper, aviator sunglasses, light down vest

You can meet them here: for a glass at Fisch Witte, for a pasta at Café Nymphenburger Sekt and then again for a glass at the Max & Moritz wine bar

What they have with them: the baby rough-coated dachshund or their Weimaraner

What they order: iced oyster platter and a bottle of champagne

They talk about: Emerging markets

And on the way home they take... a photo of the Aperol Tower at Brezenreiter.

The business type

How to recognise him: classic in a suit or casual in a jacket with jeans and sneakers

You can meet him here: During his lunch break at Münchner Suppenküche (restaurant with a large selection of soups) or Caspar Plautz (hip potato stand) and then for a quick espresso macchiato at the Kaffeerösterei Viktualienmarkt (coffee roastery)

What he has with him: company mobile und job e-bike

What he orders: The older generation eat goulash soup at Suppenküche, the youngsters queue for the ‘potato of the week’ at Caspar Plautz

He talks about: ‘So after this elevator pitch, we finally have to think outside the box...’

And on the way home, he picks up… a loaf of bread from the Bäckerliesl, because Julius Brantner (famous bakery) is always closed on Mondays.

The tourist

How to recognise her: sun hat, city guide, selfie stick

You can meet her here: at the Saure Ecke stand with a pickle in her hand, with a bratwurst in the beer garden at Viktualienmarkt or with a fish sandwich in front of Nordsee (fish restaurant)

What she has with her: her smartphone in a flip-open case to take a photo of everything for her WhatsApp status

What she orders: a ‘Maaas’ beer, please!

She talks about: : ‘After the Viktualienmarkt tasting tour, it's straight on to the city hall tour and then the hop-on hop-off city tour!’

And on the way home she takes... honey from the Honighäusl as a souvenir for the neighbours.

The foodie

How to recognise him: Leica, the latest iPhone and a tripod to document everything for Instagram

You can meet him here: With a panini in front of Marinas Feinkost (stand with Italian delicatessen), with a falafel plate in front of Sababa and then for a baklava at Nadir Güllü

What he has with him: Stickers from his own food blog

What he orders: the ‘Trüffelsau’ sandwich with truffle pesto, capra tartufata, artichokes, porchetta and rocket salad

He talks about: ‘I'll get 200 grams of guanciale for the carbonara tonight!’

And on the way home, he picks up... a Bleu d'Auvergne from Tölzer Kasladen (cheese stand), fresh chanterelles from Pilze Zollner (mushroom stand) and, of course, a Schmalznudel (Bavarian doughnut) from the famous Café Frischhut.

The sporty one

How to recognise her: Yoga leggings, cool mum cap, vintage Louis Vuitton bag

You can meet her here: shopping for vegetables at Resi am Markt, in front of the matcha shelf at Teaflower and by the bouquets at Blütenrein

What she has with her: yoga mat, Stanley Cup, cargo bike

What she orders: kilos of celery for her new juicer

She talks about: ‘I've just signed up for Reformer Pilates at the new Bootcamp Baby.’

And on the way home, she picks up... an açaí bowl from the Lyfe café next door!
