Among the many churches in Munich, the Herz Jesu Kirche in Neuhausen is a real insider tip. This extraordinary church building impresses with its modern architecture and the largest church gates in the world. The church belongs to the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising and was chosen as one of two Munich churches as a ‘place of meaning’ due to its special aura.
The Herz Jesu Kirche München was built between 1997 and 2000 according to the plans of Munich architects Allmann Sattler Wappner and, like its predecessor, which was destroyed in a fire in 1994, was dedicated to the ‘Sacred Heart of Jesus’. The striking cubic shape, combined with a 16 metre high glass front and semi-transparent side walls, creates a unique interplay of light and space. Inside the glass cube is a second wooden cube, which forms the actual church. Light enters through louvres on the sides to varying degrees depending on the position of the sun. This special design creates an atmosphere of openness and cosiness at the same time.
In a very special experience that can only be enjoyed on high feast days, the entire front of the Herz-Jesu-Kirche opens completely, like a huge, double-winged gate, allowing people to see right through to the back of the church to the oratory in the apse. When these huge doors are not open, visitors can access the church via two smaller doors set into the main entrance.
In addition to its architectural significance, the church is also a place of music. Organ concerts are regularly held here, where the acoustics of the large church interior are particularly impressive. The combination of space, sound and spirituality makes every concert an unforgettable experience.
