A touch of Venetian romance in Munich: Let yourself be enchanted on a gondola ride through the park of Nymphenburg Palace.
It may be hard to believe at first, but gondolas are a long-standing tradition in Munich. Even the courts of the Bavarian electors enjoyed soaking up the beautiful landscape in the heart of Munich’s palace gardens from their seat in these Venetian boats.
Elector Max Emanuel (1662 to 1726), for example, owned a flotilla of around 80 gondolas and magnificent boats. In his time, he connected the palaces in Dachau, Schleißheim and Nymphenburg with a canal system and brought Venetian gondoliers and their gondolas to Munich. The Venetians lived where the Palm House is located today in the park of Nymphenburg Palace and the shipyard was also situated there.
Today, you can book a trip on the castle canal in an original Venetian gondola. For some it is pure romance and the opportunity for a wedding proposal, for others it is simply a wonderfully relaxing experience.
The operator himself was a professional sailor when he discovered his love for beeing a gondolier, his son learnt it from scratch and steers the gondola with the same Venetian nonchalance. Two to three times a year, the father and son team go on “training trips“ on Venice's canals. In contrast to the lagoon city, things are very quiet and tranquil on the castle canal, where you glide right through nature.
Munich's Nymphenburg Palace Park is an exceptionally beautiful place that can be explored by gondola.
