Good Friday 2024

Bach: St Matthew Passion at the Isarphilharmonie

Bach's St Matthew Passion is a wonderful way to ring in the Easter holidays. Hardly any work in the history of music still captivates listeners as much as Johann Sebastian Bach's St Matthew Passion. The message of the work is both stirring and comforting. The composition was probably first heard in 1727 at the Good Friday Vespers in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig. The annual performance has already been cultivated as a firm tradition in Munich's concert life for several years. This year, the St Matthew Passion will take place on Good Friday at 2 pm and at 7 pm in the Isarphilharmonie!
When: 29 March 2024, 2 pm and 7 pm
Where: Isarphilharmonie
Information & tickets: www.muenchenticket.de

St John Passion in the Herkulessaal at the Residenz (city palace)

Some 300 years after its premiere in Leipzig in 1724, Johann Sebastian Bach's St John Passion is still one of the most moving and at the same time dramaturgically effective works in music history. The Gospel account of Christ's suffering and death is here transformed into a tragedy full of pain and baroque colourfulness. Hardly any listener can escape this composition with its almost magical effect. On Good Friday, the play will be performed under the direction of Thomas Gropper in the Herkulessaal in the Residenz.
When: 29 March 2024, 7 pm
Wo: Herkulessaal in the Residenz

Special concert in the Court Chapel of the Residenz

A musical journey through time will take place in the historically important Court Chapel in Munich's Residenz on Good Friday. Joseph Haydn's “The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross“, a meditation music in the version for string quartet, will be performed. Haydn's Passion cycle for orchestra or string quartet overwhelmed contemporaries and still gives today's audiences the impression that the seven words of Jesus on the cross recorded in the Gospels are “true and solemn“.
When: 29 March 2024, 6 pm
Where: Residenz

The Bundesjugendballett has also danced in unusual places such as a swimming pool or in prison. For two years, eight talented young dancers aged between 18 and 23 are now working in the ensemble at the Prinzregententheater.
