The Ferris wheel Umadum in Munich.

Ferris Wheel „Umadum“

The Big Wheel of Munich

The "Umadum München", the world’s biggest mobile Ferris wheel, has been in Munich's Werksviertel-Mitte since April 2019.

First "Umadum" then high culture: Before the ground is broken for the new concert hall in the "Werksviertel-Mitte" district (a former factory site) near Ostbahnhof railway station, the site will temporarily be host to the "Umadum München", the biggest mobile Ferris wheel in the world. The 78 metres high big wheel is due to start turning as of April 14th 2019 and will be carrying up to 1,300 passengers per hour into the Munich skies and back again.

The latest attraction in the Isar metropolis is even in the Guinness Book of Records and is 30 metres higher than the big wheel at the Oktoberfest. The "Umadum München" has 27 air-conditioned Zeppelin gondolas which can each accommodate 16 passengers. The gondolas have all-round glazing to give a clear view of Munich from an entirely new perspective and are bound to become a popular romantic sunset location. All gondolas can be booked privately, there is also a VIP gondola for events, such as meetings where a little 'farsightedness' might prove beneficial. A veal sausage breakfast in the gondola is also offered as an option for enjoying the Munich panorama in true Bavarian style.

The waiting area is covered by a transparent construction to protect the visitors from rain and snow. The fully automatic access control is managed by an electronic ticket system, a trip is scheduled to last 30 minutes. Catering and merchandising outlets will round off the visitors’ experience. The Motorworld Group will be operating the big wheel and has already announced that the Umadum München will be open daily from 10 am to 10 pm, saturdays from 10 am to midnight. The Munich-based company Maurer SE is the manufacturer of the R80 XL Ferris wheel and is responsible for erecting the big wheel.

At least just as interesting as the view of the old city centre will be to see how the Werksviertel-Mitte district itself grows into a new quarter of the city. The former industrial premises will be turned into a creative vision of urban life providing a combination of living and working, learning and entertainment, and art and culture. A sustainable approach plays a key role here. For example, the former factory buildings of WERK3 will also accommodate subsidised ateliers and an integrated gastronomy scheme, and on the green grass of the rooftop city meadow sheep will graze and bees will buzz.

How long the big wheel will turn in the east of Munich depends on how the planning of the new concert hall progresses. For the time thereafter there are moves afoot to find a new site in Munich.
