Diversity delights, opposites attract

The Munich and Hamburg Convention Bureaus joint publicity tour in England.

One of the clichés that is repeated about North and South Germans is the assertion that Bavarians and Northerners are linked to one another with intimate aversion. It is simply not true! The MICE professionals of the Munich and Hamburg Convention Bureaus are absolutely convinced of this and can even prove it. After all, in November they completed a successful roadshow together in England for the third time to present the meeting qualities of the two metropolises to potential customers in Manchester, the Midlands and London.

The differences between the two cities are an invaluable asset, as they show how multifaceted Germany is as a MICE destination. On the one hand Munich, with royal Bavarian splendour and the Alps on its doorstep, on the other hand the Hanseatic city of Hamburg, where life and economy are entirely oriented towards the sea. Opposites that complement each other wonderfully and offer English customers the added value of gaining a more comprehensive picture of Germany and establishing contacts with two attractive conference and congress destinations.

For four days, from 12 to 15 November 2019, the teams of the Munich and Hamburg Convention Bureaus completed many customer meetings in agencies as well as with corporate and association customers. In so doing, they used a new type of presentation: Using city maps and small figurines, the employees simulated a city tour, told about the MICE possibilities on site at the various locations and introduced the partners working there. Ruby Hotels and Weichlein Tours & Incentives from Munich accompanied the Convention Bureau to England.

To provide further insights, evening networking events were held in London and Manchester, which were geared towards "German Christmas". In a pre-Christmas atmosphere with music, mulled wine and culinary specialities from Germany, the guests not only learnt the important MICE news from Hamburg and Munich, they also got a quick course in gingerbread house building. Afterwards they got to compete in small teams in the big Gingerbread Challenge for the most beautiful crunchy house. Since Christmas trees and Christmas markets were welcomed with enthusiasm in England, this Christmas tradition is likely to invoke many imitators.

Stephanie Kröter, Marketing Manager Conventions of the Munich Convention Bureau, reported on her experiences in England: "Munich and Hamburg have a lot to offer both to tourists as well as for conference and congress tourism. The fact that the cities are otherwise quite different made it doubly exciting for our customers, as they were able to get to know our country from different angles. I can well imagine that we now have even more English event planners on our radar.”
