Questionnaire: Luise Kinseher

Your favourite Bavarian word, Mrs. Kinseher?

Munich is shaped by extraordinary women. In our questionnaire we would like to introduce a few of them. This time: Luise Kinseher. The cabaret performer appears on the stages of Bavaria like no one else; outside of the Free State, she is best known for the series "Café Meineid" (1990 – 2003) as well as Mama Bavaria on the Nockherberg (2011 – 2018).

Were you born in Munich or did you move here?
I was born in Lower Bavaria. As a young girl, I wanted to move to Italy, to the south, but I've stuck around in Munich. The whole of Munich is full of people from Lower Bavaria who never made it to Italy!

In which district are you at home?
I've been living in Westend for almost 25 years, or to be more precise on the Schwanthalerhöhe. These are the streets behind the Theresienwiese, named after the sculptor of the Bavaria statue: Ludwig Schwanthaler. So I really don't like it when people say I come from Westend. You should get it right!

What does Munich taste like?
A lot of bar and restaurant owners complain about the lack of motivated staff and good chefs. The good people can't find affordable accommodation – unfortunately that's increasingly the taste of Munich!

What does Munich sound like?
Munich has a colourful music scene. I like Moop Mama and G. Rag. My absolute top secret tip: the musicians' regular table at the Hofbräuhaus! It's where the city's best folk musicians get together, and you often get jazz musicians mixing with opera singers. That's when Munich sounds at its loveliest: when everyone plays music together!

What does Munich smell like?
When the "Föhn" wind hits Munich, the mountains almost creep into your nose.

Munich is the only city where ...
… you can bathe in a wild water mountain river.

Which Munich lady should everyone know?
Everyone should know the actress and cabaret performer Liesl Karlstadt. She has a fountain at the Viktualienmarkt (food market) where you visit her and even drink a half of beer with her.

Your favourite Bavarian word?
"Lefdutti", because there's no better name for an "idiot".

The most attractive building in the city?
Not the Gasteig!

The catchiest Munich song?
"Du schöne Münchner Stadt, sei tausendmal gegrüßt!" No one has ever sung it so beautifully as the great Bally Prell did.

Isar or Eisbach?
I don't care! It's all the same to me! The Eisbach flows into the Isar, which in turn flows into the Danube and all the water ultimately ends up in the Black Sea. By the way, lost surf boards from the Eisbach turn up there.

Beer garden or bar?
From beer garden to bar! Because beer gardens usually close far too early.

A weekend in the mountains or by the lake?
From the Herzogstand, you can get the cable car right down to Lake Walchensee. I think that's ideal.

The best place in Munich to impress visitors?
I love to take my visitors to the foot of the Bavaria statue. We look across the Theresienwiese and visitors are amazed that there is a square in the centre of Munich that is not completely built up. Or you could save up and wait for the Oktoberfest. It could only happen in Munich.

The best place in Munich for a romantic date?
Full moon in the Hofgarten.

The best place in Munich to think?
Sitting in traffic on the central ring road. You can't get out, and you have the time to think.

The best place in Munich to experience culture?
Munich has a lively and thriving cabaret scene and has successfully retained its biotope of creative anarchy. Always an experience!

The best place in Munich if you are longing for Italy?
Just around the corner from me! My regular Italian! Everyone loves him because he's so Italian. Actually, he's half-French with Algerian roots!
