The Märchenbazar is not a traditional Christmas market with long rows of stalls: during Advent, a nostalgic world of circus tents and fairground structures takes shape in the Olympiapark Süd. The three heated tents offer a cosy place to linger, even in cold winter weather. There are also artistic performances and a varied programme of cultural and children’s events.
The Märchenzelt is the central meeting place for families and culture lovers. The programme here includes storytelling sessions, children’s crafts, candle-making, puppet theatre, children’s concerts and interactive shows, as well as music, acrobatics and other cultural events.
The Goldmarie Tent is a creative, cultural and cosy space. Alongside workshops, readings and poetry events, it hosts, amongst other things, the fairy-tale bakery for children, as well as activities centred on smoking and other special events.
The Holle Tent provides a space for socialising, sharing ideas and special projects. Amongst others, the InterEuropean Human Aid Association is represented here, offering informal education, support and opportunities to meet people; workshops and other events also take place. The atmosphere around the fire pit is particularly lively: on selected evenings, visitors can watch various fire shows here.
At the market stalls, you can discover handmade products, individual pieces and one-of-a-kind items ranging from jewellery, ceramics and fashion to home décor and much more. The culinary scene is also international: alongside a variety of street food options – ranging from African dishes to burgers, bratwurst, crêpes, Schupfnudeln and Vietnamese cuisine – there are plenty of vegetarian and vegan specialities as well as organic products. This makes it easy to combine a visit with a stroll through the market and a break for a bite to eat.
A varied programme is a key feature of the Märchenbazar. During the day, the focus is mainly on families and children, whilst in the evenings there is a daily programme of live music, performances and other cultural events.
With its varied programme of free events, there is plenty to discover for adults and culture lovers alike. Live music is performed daily on the stages of the Märchenbazar – featuring artists from Munich and all over the world. The programme is complemented by theatre, circus acts, workshops, readings and performances. Highlights of the programme include, for example, circus shows and fire shows. Poetic events and interactive activities also feature in the programme.
There are various activities for children every day. These include storytelling sessions, children’s craft sessions, candle-making and the nostalgic children’s carousel. On Sundays, the Punch and Judy show provides entertainment from 12 noon to 3 pm; at the weekend, there are also children’s concerts and interactive shows.
A special attraction is the Fairy-Tale Bakery: here, children can mould a little elf figure out of dough and then take it home freshly baked. This activity is recommended for children aged four and above.
