This has never happened before: a dedicated stadium is being built for British artist Adele at Messe München (Munich Trade Fair), which will seat 80,000 spectators per evening. Adele will play a total of ten concerts at the venue in August 2024. The singer has not been to Munich since 2016, and the performances at the exhibition centre will be the only dates in Europe this year.
The open-air concerts will take place on 2, 3, 9, 10, 14, 16, 23, 24, 30 and 31 August 2024. Pre-sales for this tour started on 7 February 2024 for registered fans and on 9 February 2024 for everyone else! More than 2.2 million people have registered for ticket sales.
If you are travelling to Munich for the Adele concert, you should combine your stay with a visit to the sights or a guided city tour. On this overview page you will find the 20 most important sights in Munich. Many of them are located in the city centre and can be easily discovered on foot.
Anyone travelling to Marienplatz has the world-famous Frauenkirche (cathedral), the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) and the Viktualienmarkt just around the corner. One stop further on, at Odeonsplatz, you will find the Residenz (city palace), the Feldherrnhalle and the Theatinerkirche (church). It is also worth making a detour to Schwabing and Maxvorstadt – here you will find the Englischer Garten, one of the largest parks in the world, and the Kunstareal with its dozens of museums and galleries.
On a city tour, a certified guide will tell you all about the highlights of Munich. You can do this on foot, by bike or by rickshaw. The Old Town tour, the guided tour of the Hofbräuhaus or a tasting tour of the Viktualienmarkt are particularly popular. However, you can also discover Munich on a sightseeing tour: On the hop-on hop-off tour, a blue double-decker bus takes you from one major sight to the next.
August in Munich also means midsummer: the city is emptier than usual because the whole of Bavaria is on summer holidays. This is another reason why the month is particularly suitable for a visit. You can spontaneously find a place everywhere – in the outdoor pool, in the beer garden or on one of the fantastic roof terraces. If you don't want to pay admission, you can also go swimming in the Isar or in one of the beautiful bathing lakes in and around Munich.
The best way to explore Munich in summer is by bike. In the city centre and neighbourhoods close to the centre, such as Maxvorstadt, Schwabing and the Glockenbachviertel, you can get everywhere quickly. It's a sustainable way to get from one ice cream parlour to the next park, from the open-air cinema to the courtyard flea market.
Munich's surrounding area is worth a visit at any time of year. In summer, of course, the swimming lakes, cycle tours or a few easy hikes are worthwhile. The most popular destinations in the warmer months include the lakes Starnberger See, Ammersee, Walchensee and Chiemsee. If you want to stop for a bite to eat on the mountain, you will find what you are looking for in our mountain hut guide.
Apart from a great summer of concerts, there are also other event highlights on offer in Munich in August: As every year, the Auer Dult takes place on Mariahilfplatz (Jakobidult until 4 August 2024). The Dult is a mixture of folk festival and market – in addition to crockery and household goods, art and antiques are also on offer. You can also simply sit in the beer garden and enjoy a tasty meal.
The Kulturstrand (cultural beach) at Corneliusbrücke is also a hit with locals and visitors alike. Lots of sand is piled up on the Isar in summer – you can grab a Spritz at the bar, listen to concerts and feel a bit like you're by the sea with your feet in the sand. Kulturstrand 2024 takes place throughout August.
Perfect for music fans: the Munich Open Air Summer (7 to 18 August 2024) offers a colourful programme of rock, pop, jazz, folk music, opera and classical music over two weeks. Vivaldi's “Four Seasons“ will be among the works performed at the open-air event in the Residence's Brunnenhof courtyard. On 14 August 2024, the audience can also look forward to a summer night of film music.
Munich and music – this history goes back many decades. Back in the 1950s, world-famous jazz clubs opened in the Bavarian capital, and in the 1970s and 1980s, international rock stars from all over the world were guests. Among them was Freddie Mercury, who liked Munich so much that he took a small flat in the Glockenbachviertel (district) and became a regular at the Deutsche Eiche inn.
Mercury celebrated his 39th birthday in the nightclub Old Mrs Henderson, now known as Paradiso – some scenes from this evening can be seen in the music video for “Living On My Own“. If you want to follow in the footsteps of the world star, book a Freddie Mercury Tour!
If you want to go out, you'll find what you're looking for in our club guide or in the listicle on Munich's club culture. And there are also several bars in the city that offer live music! If you prefer something a little more dignified, go to the Nationaltheater (opera house) or one of the great concert halls in the evening. Four new cultural stages have recently opened in Munich – including the high-calibre Isarphilharmonie!
The best way to get to the Adele concerts at Messe München in August 2024 is by public transport: U-Bahn line 2 and several buses run to Messestadt West.
