UEFA EURO 2020

European football championships in Munich – simply fantastic

Flags, rickshaws, info screens, light displays and a brand new photo spot on Marienplatz: with the European Football Championship, Munich’s love of football and passion for hospitality are on display all over the city.

Football brings people together all kinds of people, from countries all over the world. That’s why the UEFA Euro 2020 logo includes bridges as a symbol of solidarity and unity. Munich is delighted to be welcoming fans as part of the European Championships family.

In honour of the event, the city’s Department of Education and Sport and the Department of Labour and Economic Development/München Tourismus have developed a visual campaign which uses the cityscape to present Munich’s passion for football; it includes digital posters, videos on info screens, UEFA flags featuring the München Tourismus logo, branded rickshaws and light displays across the city, all promoting the sport and the European Football Championship. The graphics used are based on the München Tourismus corporate design, with the existing Münchner Kindl and football icons being teamed with a trophy icon which has been specially developed for the European Championship.

The Host City Guide brochure, available in German and English, includes information on all relevant European Championship dates as well as suggesting some spots in the city where visiting French, Portuguese and Hungarian fans can feel at home. On the relevant match days, as well as one day before and after, supporters of the visiting side will be welcomed with greetings in their native languages on info screens all over the city.

Short videos produced in collaboration with München Tourismus will be screened on passenger TVs to help get football fans in the mood as they travel to the stadium for the match. And the large posters on the refuse collection vehicles, which were developed by München Tourismus in cooperation with the city’s waste management company, Abfallwirtschaftsbetrieb München, are sure to bring a smile to anyone’s face.

Video: simply fantastic

At Olympiapark (Olympic Park), which has seen many legendary football parties in its time, a huge city dressing poster motif is displayed on LED-illuminated steles to greet visitors in front of the Olympiahalle (Olympic Hall). Like München Tourismus, Olympiapark GmbH will also be playing the video clips shown on the info screen on its social media channels.

Light events UEFA EURO 2020

At a number of sites around the city, light displays projecting the campaign’s football, Münchner Kindl and trophy icons onto key buildings will also help publicise UEFA EURO 2020.

The three-metre-tall 3D sculpture on Marienplatz – we call it the Spectacular – presents a perfect photo backdrop for sharing on social media, as fans can grab a selfie or a group shot with the jumbo Münchner Kindl which holds a trophy in one hand and a football in the other. This shareable content will help draw attention to Munich as a sports-loving, cosmopolitan city. The Spectacular is also based on the München Tourismus corporate design.

The European Football Championship will begin on 11 June. Munich will be the venue for three group matches for the German national team: on 15 June they play France, followed by Portugal on 19 June and Hungary on 23 June, as well as a quarter final on 2 July.
