Versailles in the middle of Bavaria – visit Bavaria's largest lake and its islands, including a palace and an abbey.
To Versailles and back in just one day
Not possible? Well, actually it is ... kind of. Unbeknown to many, there is a little piece of Versailles in the middle of Bavaria: Herrenchiemsee Palace. King Ludwig II acquired the Herreninsel in 1873 so he could build a replica of the Palace of Versailles. The palace was intended to be a "Temple of Fame" for King Louis XIV of France, as Ludwig absolutely adored the French king. Upon arriving at Lake Chiemsee, you will visit the Herreninsel, the island in the middle of Bavaria's largest lake, and delve into the world of King Ludwig II.
But that's not all: after taking in the impressive palace, there's another exciting stop on this tour. A boat will take you to the neighbouring Fraueninsel, where you can enjoy a culinary treat. With your batteries recharged, enjoy a tour of the island and visit the Benedictine abbey.
