Romantic Places in Munich

20 tips for lovers

Love is no solo; love is a duet! We've put together 20 tips for partners and budding lovers. Discover the most romantic places in Munich and have a lovely time together. Our 20 Tips for an unforgettable Valentine's Day.

What can you do in Munich if you want to spend a romantic evening for two? Where are beautiful places for lovers in Munich? What tips are there for a couple for a romantic day in Munich? We give an overview of restaurants, parks and places for lovers.

1. The Old Love Tree at Schloss Nymphenburg

Many lovers are drawn to the old love tree in Nymphenburg Palace Park along the left side of the baroque park grounds. The tree is littered with countless vows of love left by loved-up couples. If the weather's nice, a trip along the palace canal in an authentic Venetian gondola is an unforgettable experience; it's the perfect setting for couples who want to take the next step by making a very special marriage proposal.

2. Above the Roofs of Munich

If the weather's nice, we recommend The Louis Roof Terrace at the Hotel Louis at the Viktualienmarkt (market). The green roof terrace offers unique views, especially in summer. The Blue Spa at Hotel Bayerischer Hof not only offers light spa cuisine, but also a pretty roof terrace with an unique view of the Frauenkirche (cathedral). You can also enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view from the roof terrace at Hotel Deutsche Eiche, a traditional inn and meeting place for the LGBTQ*-scene.  And Mahjong Roof Garden on the 8th floor of Hotel Mandarin Oriental spoils its guests with Asian and Latin American delicacies and a wonderful view.

3. Romantic Gardens

The pedestrian zone may be located nearby, but you can enjoy some peaceful moments in the Dichtergarten (Poets' Garden), on Galeriestrasse between the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry and the Prinz Carl Palace, and in the Kabinettsgarten (Cabinet Garden) and the adjoining Allerheiligen-Hofkirche (Court Church of All Saints) in the Munich Residenz. There are plenty of alternative places of interest in Munich where you can enjoy peace and quiet and togetherness.

4. The Stranded MS Utting

Cast off! The MS Utting, a former excursion and wedding steamship on the Ammersee (lake), has been left stranded on a railway bridge in Munich's Schlachthofviertel district. The former passenger ship has been completely transformed into a self-service evening bar with various cultural performances. You also have a wonderful view over Munich from here! If you like to take to the oars yourself and spend some time out on the water as a couple, you can rent a rowing boat at the Olympiasee or at the Kleinhesseloher See in the Englischer Garten (park).

5. Sundowner with a View

The best spots for a sundowner can be found in the Flushing Meadows Rooftop Bar in Munich's trendy Glockenbachviertel district, by the Hackerbrücke bridge near the Hauptbahnhof (Central Station), and by the Friedensengel (monument), where the city is at your feet. If you'd like to enjoy a 3-course meal during the sunset, you can book a table at the revolving Restaurant 181 in the 181-metre-high Olympic Tower.

6. Carriage Ride

A carriage ride through the Englischer Garten, starting at the Chinesischer Turm (Chinese Tower), is a very special experience. Kutscherei Holzmann was established in 1945 as the only carriage company in Munich that is allowed to travel through the English Garden and pedestrian zone. What could be more romantic than a horse and carriage ride through one of the world's largest parks? If you prefer a quieter pace, discover the northern part of the English Garden together.

7. Stargazing Together

You can enjoy a very romantic visit to the Bavarian Public Observatory in Munich, one of the largest of its kind in Germany. Discover the infinite nature of the universe! We also have a special gift idea for lovers, as you can even dedicate a star to your partner. Another very special starry sky is offered by the VIP gondola in the giant wheel Umadum in the Werksviertel-Mitte near the Ostbahnhof. Those who book a drinks package can enjoy the great view under the stars with a glass of wine. For asking the one important question, there is a marriage proposal package with a rose and a bottle of prosecco.

8. Dinner in France

If you'd like to eat under the light of the moon, you should visit the Restaurant Marais Sois in Westend district and book a table in the dark room with a moon lamp on the wall. The French restaurant serves haute cuisine and has been considered one of the finest places in Munich Westend for many years. If you can't get a table here, the enchanted backyard of L'Adresse 37 is also very romantic and French!

9. Private Spa

The Dorfbad Tannermühl (village baths) offers a tremendous amount of togetherness and romance in the district of Bayrischzell (accessible via the Bayerische Oberlandbahn public transport network). Its “very private spa” is the perfect place to enjoy some special time together in a unique atmosphere. The village baths lie at the bottom of the Wendelstein mountain in the beautiful setting of Bayrischzell. Its location at the foot of an eight-metre high waterfall is particularly impressive. Those looking for relaxation for two in Munich will find it at My Spa. The spa areas offer absolute privacy with their own sauna, whirlpool and personal relaxation room. Even with drinks and snacks on request.

10. Champagne Bell & Cocktails

Hotel Lux in the old town offers a guaranteed romantic evening with its red velvet sofas in cosy, private seating areas. Those who have dined well can quickly order a glass of bubbly via the champagne bell at each table. The bar also offers a wide range of cocktail classics!

11. First the Menu, then the Concert

A sensual combination of food and music can be enjoyed at the “Konzert & Dinner” event against the romantic backdrop of Schloss Nymphenburg (palace). You can look forward to a 3-course meal at the Schlosswirtschaft Schwaige restaurant, followed by a palace concert in the Hubertussaal. A wonderful combination for a guaranteed unforgettable evening!

12. Picnic for Two

If the weather's nice, we recommend a picnic by the Isar or in the Rosengarten. The Rosengarten is located by the Isar; it's home to thousands of blooming roses, especially in June and July. Other themed gardens offer an experience for all the senses, such as the Fliedergarten (Lilac Garden), the Duftgarten (Scent Garden) and the Tastgarten (Touch Garden).

13. Cinema for Lovers

Open-air cinemas like the “Kino, Mond & Sterne” in the Westpark and the cinema by the Olympic Lake attract lots of visitors, especially in summer. In the Astor Cinema Lounge at the Hotel Bayerischer Hof, lovers can take a seat in comfortable lounge sofas that invite you to cuddle up together. The cosy extra-wide cinema armchairs with footstool in the Gloria Palast are also the perfect place to enjoy a nice evening at the cinema for two. Both cinemas also offer the option of having food and drinks served directly to your seat.

14. Candle-Light-Dinner

Surrounded by flickering candles and emerald-green tiled walls, guests at Kismet near the Frauenkirche look forward to a romantic evening. Enjoy the oriental-vegetarian cuisine with a touch of 1001 nights. La Vecchia Masseria, just a few minutes from Sendlinger Tor, spoils lovers with Mediterranean specialities by candlelight in a rustic ambience. Pure romance in a real castle by candlelight and a 3- or 5-course menu is available at the Schlosswirtschaft Schwaige.

15. A Statue that Brings Luck

“Romeo and Juliet” is arguably Shakespeare's most famous love story and has even left its mark on Munich. A statue of Juliet Capulet can be found right behind the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) between Marienplatz (main square) and the Heilig-Geist-Kirche (church). The original statue of Juliet was a gift from our twin city of Verona. According to the local superstition, touching the statue will bring you luck in love.

16. Walk along the Schloss Blutenburg

The Blutenburg castle complex with chapel in the west of Munich still impressively shows the old structures of the moated castle from the 15th century and offers a beautiful backdrop during a walk. Incidentally, you can also get married in the castle chapel.

17. Roses, Romance and Peace for two

The Munich Botanical Garden is a green paradise and worth a visit at any time of year: beautiful exotic butterflies fly freely in the aquatic plant house from December to March and in spring and summer you can simply let yourself be carried away by the scent of the flowering plants.
The Roseninsel (Rose Island) with its small island villa, the so-called  Casino, in Starnberger See (lake) is not only worth a visit when the roses are in bloom in summer. From the beginning of May to mid-October, the ferry takes just 5 minutes from the Glockensteg in Feldafing to the Rose Island.

18. The Isar, Love Locks and Pure Nature

No matter where you walk out of town along the Isar, you will reach the Großhesseloher Brücke (bridge), a railway bridge with many love locks hanging from the railings. At the Konsum Kiosk on the Isar canal, you can also get a little refreshment from midday. On the way back, you could also make a detour to Tierpark Hellabrunn (zoo).

19. The Way to the Heart is through the Stomach

Sushi, vegan, Bavarian classics or would you prefer pizza and pasta? Depending on their tastes, lovers can attend a cookery course together and be inspired by the different flavour sensations.

20. Eternally Yours, Eternally Mine, Eternally Ours (Ludwig van Beethoven)

With all the tips for lovers, one would like to go one step further and dedicate oneself to the wedding preparations. Even long-time married couples are increasingly renewing their vows in the presence of their children or grandchildren. With its romantic garden, the Lola Montez Haus takes you back to the 19th century and offers a wonderful setting for a free wedding ceremony or wedding reception for up to 80 people. The Waldhaus zur alten Tram is located on the edge of Grünwalder Forst. A free wedding ceremony can be planned under a fragrant spruce tree with a view of a historic tram. The various rooms allow celebrations for up to 150 people. In the Alte Gärtnerei in Taufkirchen, four landscaped greenhouses with magnificent plants and flowers are available for wedding celebrations or a wedding ceremony, depending on the number of guests.
