Award-winning cuisine at a taster price

Many upmarket restaurants and award-winning eateries in Munich offer a lower cost lunchtime menu – and if you eat then, you have a very good chance of getting a table without booking ahead.

Der Dantler: Purveyors of fine food and Bavarian deli

Based on the format of the American deli, Der Dantler in Obergiesing has now made a name for itself far beyond its local district. Eat here in the evening and you'll pay €70 for your meal. If you want to sample the Bavarian-American world of Dantler, lunchtime is a better option. You'll be served home-made pasta, pastrami sandwiches, Giesinger Ramen (soup) plus the fish dish of the day. And don't forget dessert, of course.

Le Berlü: A little piece of Paris in the heart of Munich 

The rear courtyard of Le Berlü in the Schlachthofviertel (quarter) feels a lot like Paris. But whether you sit outside or in, the food here is always exceptional. While prices in the evening are somewhat higher, you can enjoy the delicious dishes at lunchtime at almost give-away prices. The menu is a mix of France with a little bit of Spain – for example the baked prawns, beef tartare with quail's egg or leg of lamb with bean ragout. But for dessert, it has to be the 100% French chocolate cake!

Alois im Dallmayr: Fine dining with a big name

The Restaurant Alois im Dallmayr only opened in 2018 – but young head chef Christoph Kunz has already earned two Michelin stars and 17 Gault & Millau points. Entering this velvety soft award-winning establishment on the first floor of the delicatessen building feels a bit like walking into a Wes Anderson film. And when, for example, Burgaud duck with buckthorn and young asparagus, or sweet cherry and coconut with Tasmanian pepper are served up, aesthetes will lose all sense of reason. And if you head to Alois at lunchtime, you can eat for a fraction of the cost of the evening menu.

Pescheria: Munich can do fresh fish too!

Getting hold of freshly-caught fish in southern Germany isn't that easy, but it's certainly not impossible. If you fancy a selection of different seafoods, you can look in the glass display cabinet at Pescheria in the quarter of Glockenbach and choose your own – there's oysters, loup de mer and salmon fillet on ice. The fish is served from the lava stone grill direct to the plate. If you have lunch here, the changing lunch time menu at €9.90 – including salad buffet – is a must. And in the summer, grab a table in the wonderful terrace in the rear courtyard.

Sparkling Bistro: A new interpretation of Austrian cuisine

The Sparkling Bistro in the Maxvorstadt district may not have been awarded any Michelin stars in 2019, but it won't be long before it is. This great place is somewhat hidden in the Amalienpassage. Head chef Jürgen Wolfsgruber personally welcomes his guests to enjoy fine Austrian cuisine. For example there's Dry Aged Sulmtaler chicken with walnut and honey truffle on the menu, along with venison from the Kobernausserwald served with caviar, beechnuts and shiso. Quality counts here – some of the produce is sourced from small family businesses – and you can taste it. It's worth having lunch here, when the fabulous food is served at low prices.

Tian: Vegetarian cuisine at the highest level

Vegetarians and vegans don't always find it easy to find sophisticated food – but that ended when Tian opened its doors in Munich. The restaurant on the Viktualienmarkt has even cooked its way to a Michelin star, making it the city's first Michelin-starred vegetarian restaurant. On the menu are, for example, courgette flowers with polenta and chanterelles or mushroom consommé with beech mushrooms and brioche. Enjoy lunch rather than dinner here, and you'll pay half the price for the four-course menu.

Vinaiolo: Italian dishes and fine wines

From the outside, this place looks more French – but that might also be down to the district because Haidhausen is still known today at the French Quarter. But what the Vinaiolo serves up is fine Italian cuisine and a selection of wines that are not just for looking at. The countless wine bottles sit in a 100-year-old merchant's chest that lines the walls of this romantic restaurant. On the menu are pecorino ravioli with shrimps and caviar, sea bass with salt crust or shoulder of veal with truffle and potato purée – and just because it's lunchtime doesn't mean you can't enjoy a glass of wine.
